Abstract
he Huayan jing gangyao (華嚴經綱要) was compiled in the early 9th century by the Tang Dynasty Huayan patriarch Chengguan (澄觀). Until recently, only two manuscript copies preserved in Japan's Kanazawa Bunko were known to exist. However, a newly discovered 1324 Goryeo woodblock-printed edition at Korea University Library—containing a 1155 postface by Southern Song Zhang Pu and a 1324 postface(跋文) by Goryeo monk Gobeom—has drawn significant academic attention for its philological value and importance in studying East Asian Buddhist exchange. The text spread from Tang(唐) through the Song(宋) Dynasty to Goryeo and Japan. In Goryeo, National Preceptor Uicheon included it in his Gyojang-chonglok, while a 14th-century edition was reprinted using Yuan Dynasty imports. In Japan, it was transmitted through 13th-century institutions like Kosan-ji and used at Shomyo-ji, with citations also appearing in Liao and Yuan Buddhist texts, demonstrating its role as a core text for Huayan studies across East Asia. As the only extant woodblock edition worldwide, the Korea University copy enables comparative studies with Kanazawa Bunko's 1289 manuscripts to reconstruct a critical edition. This study provides fundamental material for tracing the transmission of Huayan texts and thought across Tang-Song, Goryeo, and Japan, offering new insights into the East Asian Buddhist intellectual network.
