Abstract

This study examines the plausibility that the expression in which the Jin dynasty referred to the ruler of Koryŏ as the ‘Emperor of Koryŏ(高麗國皇帝)’, found only in Jewang Ungi(帝王韻紀), was actually used, and seeks to clarify the reason and context behind such usage. Although this expression is based solely on the recollection of Yi Seung-hyu, it has long been cited as evidence that the Koryŏ ruler was recognized as an emperor even in foreign relations. However, empirical verification of the phrase’s historical authenticity has been lacking. Rather than reaffirming or dismissing previous claims, this study undertakes a multifaceted investigation into the expression’s plausibility, drawing on a range of historical sources. Whereas earlier scholarship has typically interpreted the Jin emperor’s designation of the Koryŏ ruler as an ‘emperor’ in relation to Koryŏ’s supposed operation of an imperial system, this paper explores an alternative possibility. It proposes that the Jin dynasty—despite styling itself as an imperial power—exceptionally sought to establish a ritualized fraternal relationship with Koryŏ, which externally maintained a royal identity. In doing so, the Jin may have used the title ‘Emperor of Koryŏ’ to preserve ritual symmetry in diplomatic exchanges. The Jin court, having unilaterally designated its own emperor as the elder brother and the Koryŏ monarch as the younger, may have elevated the latter’s title within diplomatic correspondence to uphold the decorum of epistolary diplomacy.
