Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop a Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) based diagnostic system for assessing the basic academic skills of undergraduate students and to explore its applicability in the university educational setting. To achieve these objectives, diagnostic items were developed considering the content structure of basic liberal arts courses such as Writing, Mathematics, English, and Software at J University. To verify the psychometric properties of the developed items, item analysis was conducted based on Classical Test Theory (CTT) and Item Response Theory (IRT), and an item bank was established. The CAT system was constructed by integrating an API into the existing Computer-Based Testing (CBT) system. To verify the accuracy and validity of the CAT system, ability estimates and the standard errors of these estimates produced by the CAT system and the IRT-related package, irtQ, were compared. The study found that the CAT-based diagnostic system enables more efficient and precise assessment of basic academic skills compared to traditional evaluation methods. This suggests the potential for providing customized education to support the individualized learning needs of students.
