Abstract
This article aims to analyze the motherhood of mobile North Korean women in terms of intimacy and sense of shame. At the point of the economic crisis so-called the Arduous March in the mid of 1990s, the role of North Korean women has changed from traditional mother to breadwinner. In this context, this paper would investigate the way in which North Korean migrant mothers reconstruct intimacy with their children by intersecting the boundary between legality and illegality and geographical territories. It has to be said that there are layered transnational networks between North Korean migrant mothers and children back home, and the women tend to formulate a new type of motherhood, that is distant motherhood. However, traditional motherhood ideology let them have the feeling of guilty towards their distant children. In order to cover up the gap between their reality and motherhood ideology, North Korean migrant mothers compensate their absence with financial support for their children, and remittance, in this context, has become a significant symbol for their pride. Anther mothering practice would be ‘emotionally distancing’ or indifference towards their children that could be interpreted as a new form of identity distinguished from being ‘traditional mother’. This research argues for the emotional transition to the sense of shame from merely alternative mothering practices among North Korean migrant mothers. It would suggest that mobile North Korean mothers and their morality especially the sense of shame bring possibilities for them to become an ethical being.
