Abstract

In this article, I insist that the legacy of public sociology we had achieved should be revived. To support this argument, the unfolding of Korean and South African sociology is described in this article. While considering the concept of the four types of sociology urging that sociology can deviate historically and nationally from professional sociology, I trace how sociology in Korea and South Africa contains unique characteristics. From the 70s to the late 80s, many sociologists in both countries began to concern relevance and usefulness of social scientific knowledge for the public. They tried to connect social scientific knowledge to the public issues, and were eager to trigger fundamental changes in society. These efforts were done under repressive regimes. Sociologists in both countries were inclined to public or critical sociology. From the early 90s, sociology is under substantial pressure. The pressure of globalization and isomorphism frames sociological researches in both countries. In this context, current sociological researches fail to cover urgent and important social issues. To overcome this crisis, we need to recover legacy of public sociology that is embedded in the tradition of Korean sociology.
