Abstract

Both the tale of Nine-Story Pagoda of Hwangryong Buddhist Temple and that of Eosanbulyeong in Samgukyusa talk about relations among the dragon, people, and Buddhist faith. Both the tales show no conflicts between the dragon and Buddhist faith, but they have different patterns of relations between the dragon and people. In the former, the dragon advises Jajang, the main character, to build a nine-story pagoda at Hwangryong Buddhist Temple in order to solve all the problems facing the nation. Returning back to Shilla, Jajang presents the idea to the king and has a nine-story pagoda built at the temple according to the advice of the dragon. Once the pagoda is completed, all the problems of the nation are resolved true to the words of the dragon. In that tale, the dragon offers advice for Buddhist Priest Jajang and people of Shilla, which means there are no situations of conflicts among the dragon, people, and Buddhist faith. In the tale of Eosanbulyeong, on the other hand, the dragon commits evil deeds one after another, making people suffer. King Suro of Garak Kingdom tries to overwhelm the dragon with an incantation, but the evil deeds of the dragon continue on. Since the dragon harasses people, its relations with them cannot help being hostile. King Suro bows his head to Buddha and asks for his help. Once Buddha comes over to Garak Kingdom and preaches his teachings, the evil deeds of the dragon stop completely. The evil deeds of the dragon, which were not stopped even by King Suro with dignity, are suppressed by the sermons of Buddha. The tale of Nine-Story Pagoda of Hwangryong Buddhist Temple and that of Eosanbulyeong are different from each other as to whether there is a conflicting situation or not between the dragon and people. The differences between them seem to have stemmed from the processes of Buddhist faith being transmitted from overseas and taking root in Shilla. While the tale of Eosanbulyeong illustrates the process of Buddhist faith settling down in Shilla and also the conflicts and their solution in the process, that of Nine-Story Pagoda of Hwangryong Buddhist Temple shows the circumstances around the establishment of Buddhist faith as the religion of Shilla. Both the tales are the same in that they solve a problem with Buddhist faith. They eventually demonstrate the problem-solving power and dignity of Buddhist faith by showing how Buddhist faith can work to solve problems. Those findings indicate that the two tales had considerable influences on the spread of Buddhist faith.
