초록

이 글에서는 질적 연구 방법 중 ‘근거이론’ 방법을 수행했던 연구자의 경험 및 어려움을 바탕으로 질적 연구 방법론의 쟁점들을 논의하고 보다 나은 질적 연구 수행을 위해서 무엇을 어떻게 할 것인가를 제시하였다. 연구자의 경험을 ‘자료 수집 단계’와 ‘자료 해석 단계’로 나누어 기술하였다. ‘자료 수집 단계’에서는 1) 라포 형성의 어려움과 ‘제 3자’의 개입, 2) 라포 과잉의 문제 3) 인터뷰의 정확성/진실성의 문제를, ‘자료 해석 단계’에서는 1) 근거이론의 연구절차와 함의점 2) 어려움과 한계를 논의하였다. 이 글에서 논의된 질적 연구 방법론의 쟁점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 근거이론에서는 연구자가 데이터 해석에 개입하는 것을 경계하여 선행연구의 필요성을 부인하지만, 실제 연구에서 선행연구를 기반으로 한 연구자의 성찰성을 배제하면서 데이터 분석을 하고 이론을 도출하는 것은 불가능하였다. 둘째, 자신이 직접 인터뷰 하지 않은 자료, 즉 2차 자료 활용과 관련한 연구자의 경험을 논의하면서 2차 자료의 장단점을 분석하였다. 셋째, 연구자와 연구 참여자 간의 권력의 문제에 대해서 설명하면서, 연구자는 연구 참여자와 함께 공동 작업을 해 간다는 점을 숙지해야 함을 강조하였다. 넷째, 거짓말 하는 연구 참여자와 관련하여, 진실여부를 어떻게 검증할 것인가에 대해서 논의하고, 질적 연구의 신뢰성과 타당성에 대해서 성찰해 보았다. 다섯째, 근거이론의 높은 자료 요구도에 대해서 어떻게 대처할 것인가에 대해서 논의하였다. 마지막으로 근거이론 연구에서 스트라우스와 코빈의 패러다임 모형의 무분별한 차용과 연구의 도식화 문제를 언급하면서, 향후 이를 어떻게 활용할 것인가를 생각해 봄으로써 근거이론을 포함한 질적 연구의 방향을 제시하였다.

Abstract

This paper was intended to address a set of qualitative research issues, derived from failures, and thereby to map out a series of ways to get a grounded theory in particular, and qualitative methodology in general, refined and developed. I examined the experiences and constraints I went through when I was doing research on adopting grounded theory based on my research experiences for the transition into adulthood of Korean young adults. First, I discussed the research issues I confronted on collecting data. This part dealt with the dilemma that led me to reflect on the issues regarding 1) the necessity of literature review in qualitative research 2) the relationship between the interviewer and the interviewee, and 3) the quality criteria in qualitative research (validity/reliability). Second, I examined the issues derived from my experiences on coding and analyzing data. This part presented 1) the reason for selecting the grounded theory coding to interpret data and 2) the evaluation of the grounded theory method by addressing its contributions and limitations. The future research implication is for qualitative researchers to pay attention to the relationships of participants in order to develop a more equal position of power within the relationship and construct a good research result through the co-work. In line with this, I discussed the usefulness of Strauss and Corbin’s grounded theory despite its weakness to build a complex substantive theory.
