Abstract
This article examines how the discourse of ‘sleeplessness’ produced and represented during the period of so-called ‘IMF Economic Crisis.’ Here, the period of the ‘IMF economic crisis’ is understood as a pivotal point when Korean society transformed into a neoliberal governing system. Western academics began to consider sleep as one of the important socio-cultural elements in understanding the contemporary economic and political system. Specifically, researches have critically explored how the sleep is connected with the current 24/7 regime to run and continue society and production restlessly. This article, in an attempt to expand the research scope, approaches sleep to explore the meaning of how this ‘political through and through’ sleeplessness was produced and represented by the dominant discourses. Especially, the sleeplessness discourse mainly put forward by The Chosun Ilbo during this period is closely related to the medicalization of sleep and the problematization of sleep. This leads to the re-normalization of human nature through the control of the amount of sleep in the 21st century when sleep earnestly made into a social problem. As such, the problematization of sleep in South Korean society began through these aspects as the media playing the leading role. Sleep is inevitable and a necessity for the human being’s survival. Will it be possible for us to find a way stop this ever-increasing sleeplessness condition of neoliberalism? This article is an attempt to find a possibility even if it seems diminutive.
