아네트의 성인모색기 개념을 중심으로 본 취약계층 청년들의 성인기 진입에 대한 연구
A Study on the Entry of Lower Class Youth into Adulthood: Focusing on the Criticism of Arnette's Theory of the “Emerging Adulthood”

아네트는 달라진 현대사회에서 20대 초중반을 명명하는 새로운 발달단계, 성인모색기(emerging adulthood)가 도입되어야 함을 주장하였다. 그의 주장과 문제제기는 새로운 생애발달 단계의 방향을 제시했다는 평가를 받기도 했으나, 때로는 그 설명력과 적용에 있어서 비판의 대상이 되기도 했다. 가장 큰 논쟁점은 그의 논의가 20대 청년층의 사회경제적 조건의 차이에 대해 별로 주목하지 않고 있다는 점이다. 이 연구에서는 취약층 청년들의 성인기 진입 과정을 아네트의 성인모색기 개념을 기반으로 분석하면서 이들의 성인기 과정을 이해하는데 아네트의 논의가 얼마나 설득력이 있는 것인가를 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 취약계층 20-24세의 연구참여자 10명을 대상으로 이들의 삶에 대해 면접조사를 실시하였다. 수합된 데이터는 2단계로 나누어 분석을 진행하였다. 1차 분석에서는 인터뷰 자료를 중심으로 연구참여자들 삶의 중요한 주제를 도출하여 이들의 20대 초중반 경험이 어떠한 것인가를 살펴보았다. 2차 분석에서는 1차 분석의 구성 요소들을 기반으로 하여, 아네트가 제시한 성인모색기의 5가지 특징(‘자아정체성 탐색의 시기’ ‘불안정한 시기’, ‘자기 중심성의 시기’, ‘중간에 낀 느낌이 드는 시기’, ‘가능성의 시기’)과 관련하여 비교고찰을 하였다. 연구결과, 가정 밖 취약 청년의 경우 아네트가 논의한 ‘성인모색기’의 특징을 보이는 면도 있었으나 그렇지 않은 면이 더 많은 것으로 나타났다. 또한 성인모색기의 특징을 보인다고 하더라도 아네트가 논의한 맥락과는 매우 다른 차원에서 이들의 삶을 보아야 한다는 것을 발견할 수 있었다. 아네트의 성인모색기 논의에서는 개인이 성인이 되어 감을 지지하고 지원하는 가족/공동체/사회적 안전망이 존재한다고 전제된다. 그러나 취약층 청년들의 경우 이와 같은 안전망이 부재한 상태에 처해 있기 때문에, 여유를 가지고 삶과 진로를 모색하는 시간을 갖기가 힘들다. 그러므로 아네트의 성인모색기 논의를 기반으로 이들의 삶을 이해할 수 있는 여지는 제한적이다. 이처럼 계층에 따라 아네트의 성인모색기 개념의 함의가 상이하기 때문에, 그의 개념을 20대 청년 일반에게 적용시키는 것은 한계가 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
Abstract
Arnnett argued that to understand life in the early and mid-20s in a rapidly changing modern society, a new stage of development, so-called “the emerging adulthood,” should be introduced. His argument was quite convincing, but on the other hand, there are indeed some limitations. The biggest problem is that his theory did not delve into young people's socioeconomic conditions/class differences. The study analyzed the process of lower-class youth entering adulthood based on Annette's “emerging adulthood” theory and accordingly tried to examine how his idea fits to understand their becoming adults. This study used an interview survey of 10 participants aged 20-24 in the lower class. Data analysis proceeded in two stages. In the first analysis step, key concepts were derived from interview data investigating the participants' life experiences. In the second analysis step, a comparative review was conducted on the five characteristics of emerging adulthood (‘time to explore self-identity, ‘time to self-centeredness’, ‘time to self-centeredness’, and ‘time to possibility’) to evaluate the eligibility of Arnett's new life stage. As a result, it's confirmed that there is a limit to fully understanding the process of becoming adults of lower-class youth. Annett's theory assumes a family/community/social stability network that supports individuals entering adulthood. However, it is challenging for vulnerable/low-class young people to have a time and economic basis for exploring their lives and careers without such a safety net. Therefore, since the meaning of Arnett's “emerging adult” varies from class to class, there is a limit to applying his concept to Korean young people from lower classes.
