Abstract

This thesis aims to investigate Toegye’s poems considering scholarly virtue and emotion. His life is related to learning, especially with the effect of education through the proper teaching. However, he did not educate his disciples in a boring or rigid way, but with a true teacher's heart. He always taught people with a pure scholar's heart and a kind neighbor's heart. These pieces of life remain in his poems. His pure heart was projected into the poem. The poet's pure affection made his poem all the more true. The true heart embodied in his poetry was expressed in old age works with a warm feeling. This feeling creates a natural impression in the poem described. The impression of his poem reminds me of a true and warm teacher and grandfather feeling. Also, the reason why his poems create impressions is that they reflect his humble and inclusive life. The teacher he admires is a great saint, who, by and large, serves as a reminder of the truth. Toegye knew that great saints such as Confucius were very soft and pure-hearted, and he also made constant efforts to maintain this spirit. These efforts are well illustrated in his poems. For example, the emotions expressed in Toegye are derived from the warm heart of the teacher and from the heart of the kind grandfather.
