Abstract
This study investigates Zhao Yi’s (趙翼, 1727~1814) yongshishi (詠史詩, Historical Narrative Poetry) to illuminate how Qing Dynasty literature integrated historical perspective and poetic imagination into a unified aesthetic form. Zhao Yi’s Historical Narrative Poetry exemplifies a distinctive integration of evidential scholarship (kaozhengxue, 考證學), which emphasized empirical accuracy and critical analysis, with the xingling (性靈, the poetics of inner sensibility and genuine emotion)) poetics that valued emotional authenticity and individual sensibility. Through this synthesis, Zhao constructed an original literary mode that harmonizes historical interpretation with artistic expression. Zhao viewed the recurring patterns of corruption, moral decline, and the limitations of heroic agency in history not as distant episodes but as reflections of the moral and political realities of his own time. His poetry thus transforms historical narrative into a medium of critical reflection and moral engagement. In Zhao’s view, emotional expression and scholarly knowledge are mutually reinforcing: deep engagement with historical texts enriches the expressive and intellectual depth of poetry. The works analyzed in this study—such as “On the Mausoleum of the Hongwu Emperor,” “Reading History,” and “Composing Playfully on Reading History”—demonstrate how Zhao Yi integrated history and emotion, narrative and critique, within a coherent poetic framework. His Historical Narrative Poetry represents a crucial development in Qing Dynasty literature, offering a model of creative integration in which poetry and historiography converge to form a unified mode of historical reflection and literary innovation.
