Abstract

With an intent to construct a public theology for an age of information media, this article revisits the perennial issue concerning the role of theology in the university. Section 2 draws on Schleiermacher, Edward Farley and Hans Frei, calling attention to the root problem of the issue: theology’s social duality, which designates the historical/ empirical fact that theology ambiguously positions itself between religion and academia. Section 3 concisely presents Niklas Luhmann’s systems theory and his sociology of religion. Constructively appropriating Luhmann’s insights, Section 4 proposes a new conceptualization: theology can function as information medium, mediating via the recodification process the religious system and the academic system, so as to optimize both observations. It is also argued that theological recodification is possible thanks to its intrinsic code duality, which refers to the fact that for theological discourse processes its information in terms of both the religious(primary) code and the academic(secondary) code. Section 5 explicitly relates this new conceptualization with revelation to suggest that theology selects and recodifies, as latent revelatory observations, relevant information from the observations of diverse academic disciplines, in order to optimize the manifest revelatory observations of the religious system.
