연쇄 강간범에 대한 지리적 프로파일링에 관한 연구

본 연구는 연쇄강간 사건에 다양한 지리적 프로파일링 방법을 적용시켜 지리적 프로파일링 기법의 유용성을 확인하고, 보다 효과적인 기법을 확인하기 위한 목적으로 이루어졌다. 이를 위해, 경찰청 지리적 프로파일링 시스템과 CrimeStat 3.0을 사용하여 최소 거리 중심, 평균중심, 수학적 거리 감퇴함수 등과 같은 지리적 프로파일링 분석 알고리즘에서 예측된 범인의 거주지와 검거 후 확인된 연쇄 강간범의 실 거주지 위치 값을 비교하였다. 연구 결과, 범죄자의 심리적 완충지역과 범행이 증가할수록 범인의 실 거주지에서 범행 발생 지역 거리가 증가한다는 거리감퇴 모델을 가정하는 로그정교함수와 절삭된 부적지수 함수의 정확도가 상대적으로 높게 나타났다. 특히, 범죄자의 완충지역이 상대적으로 넓게 분포하는 로그정규함수를 통한 연쇄 강간범의 거주지 예측 결과의 정확도가 가장 높게 나타나, 국내 연쇄강간범들이 자신의 주거지 인근 지역을 벗어난 외부 주변지역에서 주로 범행을 한다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 한편, 최근거리평균 등과 같은 공간 통계 방법의 경우 강간범죄의 연쇄 건수에 의존적으로 발생건수가 극단적으로 적거나 많은 경우에는 수학적 함수를 통한 분석 결과에 비해 정확도가 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 본 연구는 실제 사건 자료를 토대로 지리적 프로파일링을 위한 공간 통계 분석을 시도했다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 특히, 완충지역과 거리감퇴 모델이라는 이론적 틀 안에서 적용되는 수학적 함수들과 단순거리 평균값의 정확도를 비교 분석한 연구 결과는 실무 차원에서 보다 효율적인 지리적 프로파일링 분석 방법을 선택, 활용하는데 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This study evaluates the usefulness of applying the different geographical profiling methods to serial rapes for eliciting more efficient geographical profiling analysis techniques. Using the Geographical Analysis System by Korean National Police Agency and CrimeStat 3.0, the location of rapists's residence were calculated based on both spatial statistics methods such as center of minimum distance, mean center and mathematically 5 kinds distance decay functions. Comparing with the location of between real and predicted rapists' residence, the results showed that both log-normal function and truncated negative exponential function based on the criminals' psychological buffer zone and distance-decay model was proven by relatively higher accuracy. Noticeably, estimate on suspect's residence using log-normal function assumed larger psychological buffer zone was highly accurate, showing that domestic serial rapists commit their crime outside of their residential area. As per spatial statistics such as center of minimum distance, mean center, it was found that analysis results based on mathematical functions became less accurate for extreme frequencies of serial rapes. This research is meaningful in the sense that it attempted statistical analysis based on the actual cases for geographical profiling. Moreover, its results in comparing the accuracies between mathematical functions and simply spatial statistics in the theoretical frame will facilitate more efficient selection of investigation tool in the scenes.
