Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the stress of police officers and the impact of a laughter therapy program on their psychological stress in an effort to determine the effect of laughter therapy on the relief and treatment of the job stress of police officers. A hypothesis that laughter therapy might exert a positive influence on the relief and treatment of the job stress of police officers was formulated, and pretest and posttest were conducted to test the hypothesis. The findings of the study were as follows: First, as for depression-related stress by age group, those who were in their 40s and up suffered the most depression-related stress, and there were no gaps in the level of stress according to gender, academic credential, religion, title, service area, the length of service, the form of service and the way of service. But the police officers who didn't find themselves to be in good health and who weren't contented with their own life experienced relatively more stress related to anxiety, depression and mood. Second, they found themselves to feel less anxiety in the posttest than in the pretest when their stress related to anxiety, depression and mood were measured. The intragroup gap was statistically significant(99% confidence interval). Third, the female police officers suffered significantly less depression-related stress after they participated in the laughter therapy program. Their marital status, age group, academic credential, religion, title, service area, department, form of service, way of service and health status made no significant differences to their stress. Regarding the influence of the length of service on stress, the police officers who worked for three years or less showed a significant change in depression-related stress. In terms of life satisfaction, those who expressed a moderate level of satisfaction at their own life and who were dissatisfied underwent significant changes in anxiety-related stress.
