이 논문은 라인홀드 니버의 기독교 현실주의 렌즈로 정의로운 전쟁론이 무엇인지를 살펴보는 것이다. 니버는 기독교 사회윤리학에서 주류에 서 있으며, 그는 철저하게 현실에 바탕을 둔 이론을 제시한다. 특히 평화주의자들의 주장을 논박하는 데 유용해 보인다. 니버의 기독교 현실주의의 시작은 인간에 대한 이해로부터 시작한다. 인간의 죄성으로 인하여 예수처럼 완전주의 윤리를 시행할 수 없다고 보았다. 사회윤리 여러 분야 가운데 특히 전쟁과 평화의 문제는 여기에서 시작한다. 평화주의자들은 성서를 따르자는 입장이고, 니버는 인간의 본질상 평화주의가 불가능하다고 보았다. 더욱이 죄된 인간들이 모여 만든 국가는 평화주의를 시행할 수 있는 가능성이 더 없다. 평화주의는 모두에게 마땅히 원하는 당위이지만, 현실에서 실행하기에는 이상적이어서 불가능하다. 현실에서는 니버의 렌즈가 훨씬 더 현실적이라고 보여진다. 니버는 정의를 이루기 위해서는 국가 간의 갈등 해결을 위한 최후의 수단으로서 정의로운 전쟁은 용인되어야 한다고 주장한다.
Abstract
This paper examines the just-war theory through the lens of Christian realism in Reinhold Niebuhr. He stands mainstream in Christian social ethics, and he presents a thoroughly realism-based theory. It seems particularly useful in refuting pacifists' arguments. His Christian realism begins with his understanding of humans. It was considered that the ethics of perfectionism could not be implemented like Jesus due to sin. Among the various fields of social ethics, espe- cially the issue of war and peace begins here. Pacifists are in a position to follow the Bible, but Niebuhr saw it as impossible in nature. A nation made of sinful humans is even more impossible. Niebuhr criticizes pacifism for being justifiable but unrealistic. Thus, Niebuhr argues that in order to achieve justice, a just war as a last mean to resolve conflicts between countries.
