초록
The problem of the relationship between the suffering of the innocent and the existence of a loving and just God has been an enduring theological problem through the ages. There is a basic consensus even today that no complete or satisfactory answer can be found to the question of suffering. Although we cannot find a successful answer, it is certain that struggles with this problem will deepen our theological insights and reveal the new understanding of God and God’s people. In this paper, I examine John Calvin’s and Gustavo Gutierrez’s views of the suffering of the innocent. In doing so, I concentrate especially on their interpretation of the Book of Job. In the first section of the paper, I summarize Calvin’s theological accents and his view of the suffering of the innocent presented in his Sermons on Job. In the next section, I explore Gutierrez’s theological emphases and his view of the suffering of the innocent revealed in his On Job: God-talk and the Suffering of the Innocent. And finally, I compare their views of the suffering of the innocent and critically appraise the contributions and limitations of each interpretation. It is certain that Gutierrez’s view is more akin to the modern Christian mind. However, it is not enough to resolve the whole problem of the suffering of the innocent. Although Calvin’s and Gutierrez’s solutions cannot offer a complete way to explain the suffering of God’s people, it is certain that their views may offer useful references for constructing a genuine Christian answer.
