Abstract
Theological aesthetics is an attempt to think together two seemingly heterogeneous categories of discourse: theology and aesthetics. Hans Urs von Balthasar has taught us that goodness without beauty loses its attractiveness while truth without beauty is no more persuasive. This essay attempts to rescue theology from its forgetfulness of beauty. I reintroduce aesthetic discourse into theology offering a new threefold system of theological aesthetics. Foundational theological aesthetics is defined as a philosophical or interparadigmatic encounter of theology and aesthetics, which focuses on foundational and interdisciplinary issues including religious pluralism, natural science and religion, literary genre of the scriptures, theological method, and so on. Systematic theological aesthetics is a doctrinal or intraparadigmatic appropriation of aesthetics in theology, which reinterprets from aesthetic perspectives the Christian doctrines of creation, redemption, sacrament, evil, and so on. Practical theological aesthetics concerns with actual uses of aesthetic medium in the context of theological practice or church life. As a case study of foundational theological aesthetics, I analyze Whitehead’s process aesthetic theodicy with seven theses to demonstrate productive possibility of aesthetic approach in theology. First, the universe is not a lump of dead matter but consists of aesthetic feeling as the universal experience of being. Second, aesthetic feeling aims at dipolar value of mathematical harmony and autumnal intensity. Third, the domination of harmony results in aesthetic evil of triviality while the domination of intensity results in aesthetic evil of discord. Fourth, Whitehead’s aesthetic ontology ultimately values intensity over harmony. Fifth, God cannot be blamed for evil, which necessarily occurs due to the ontological structure of harmony and intensity. Sixth, the universal freedom of being makes possible not only the occurrence of evil but also the advance of beauty. Last of all, God embraces the advance of beauty into his own being, which overcomes the ultimate evil of perpetual perishing with the everlasting divine beauty.
