레슬리 뉴비긴의 삼위일체론에 관한 연구

초록

20세기중후반이후로오늘날까지현대삼위일체신학이전성기를보내고 있다. 이와 연관하여 1952년 독일 빌링겐에서 개최된 국제선교협의회(International Missionary Council, IMC)에서 ‘미시오 데이’(missio Dei), 즉‘하나님의선교’(the mission of God) 개념이공식적으로표명되면서 삼위일체론이 언급된 이후로 꾸준히 논의되어 오고 있다. 그리고이개념의영향을받아‘선교적교회론’(missional church)이오늘날국내외적으로활발하게논의되어오고있다. 이와 같은 신학적 흐름에서 핵심적인 역할을 했던 신학자들 중의 하나가레슬리뉴비긴(James Edward Lesslie Newbigin, 1909-1998)이다. 뉴비긴은 케임브리지대학교 웨스트민스터 칼리지에서 신학을 공부하고 스코틀랜드장로교회에서안수를받았으며, 이후35년간인도에서선교사역을 하였고 세계교회협의회(World Council of Churches, WCC)와 세계선교회협의회(IMC)에서많은활동을하였다. 은퇴이후영국으로귀국해서는 교회가 직면한 많은 시대적 문제들과 씨름하면서 활동하였다. 뉴비긴은이렇게선교와목회위주로다양한활동들을활발하게하면서자신의신학적인입장을여러저작들을통해드러내었다. 이러한뉴비긴은한국에서도많이소개되고논의되고있는데, 최근까지그의 저서들이 많이 번역되었고 또한 그의 신학에 관한 연구들이 계속 나오고있다. 그동안뉴비긴의신학발전, 선교적교회론, 종교간대화, 공적신학, 공공선교등등에관해연구들이진행되었다. 그런데뉴비긴의신학의토대와핵심이라고여겨지는그의삼위일체론에관한연구는아주빈약하다. 그러기에본논문은뉴비긴의삼위일체론을집중적으로연구하고자한다. 먼저, 뉴비긴의삼위일체적신학에관한선행연구들을살펴본다. 그런다음에뉴비긴의삼위일체론을“선교적, 교회적, 복음적삼위일체론” 과“원초적실재로서의관계적삼위일체론”으로정리한다. 그러면서뉴비긴의관계적삼위일체의모습들을구체적으로살펴보고또한뉴비긴의삼위일체론이‘미시오데이’에관한논의의흐름에서어떤위치였는지를살펴본다. 이러한작업은‘미시오데이’와‘선교적교회론’에관한정확한파악에도움을줄뿐만아니라, 뉴비긴의신학을한국신학과교회에소개및적용하는데에귀중한도움을제공할것이다.

Abstract

From the mid-late 20th century to the present, contempoary trinitarian theology is in its heyday. In connection with this, the concept of ‘missio Dei,’ that is, ‘the mission of God’ was officially expressed together with the doctrine of the Trinity at the International Missionary Council (IMC) held in Willingen, Germany in 1952. Since then it has been continuously discussed. And under its influence, ‘missional church’ has been also actively discussed both at home and abroad. One of the theologians who played a key role in this theological stream was James Edward Lesslie Newbigin (1909- 1998). Newbigin studied theology at Westminster College, University of Cambridge, and was ordained by the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. Both in India and in U.K., he grappled with the many issues that the church faced. He participated in various activities centering on mission and ministry, and expressed his theological position. Newbigin has been introduced and discussed a lot in Korea, and until recently, many of his books have been translated and studies on his theology continue to come out. In the meantime, research has been conducted on his theological development, missionary ecclesiology, interreligious dialogue, public theology, public mission, and so on. However, research on his trinitarianism is very rare, which is considered to be the foundation and core of his theology. Therefore, this paper intends to focus on Newbigin’s trinitarianism. First, it looks at previous studies on his trinitarian theology. Then, it investigates his trinitarianism in terms of ‘a missional, ecclesial, and evangelical trinitarianism’ and ‘a relational trinitarianism as the primal reality.’ In so doing, it examines some aspects of his relational trinitarianism in detail, and also examines the position of his trinitarianism within the stream of ‘missio Dei.’ This work will not only help the accurate understanding of ‘missio Dei’ and ‘missional church,’ but also provide valuable help in introducing and applying his theology to Korea.
