Abstract

This article explores Bruce McCormack’s significant contributions to the understanding of Karl Barth’s theology within the context of the so-called Barth Renaissance in the English-speaking world. It critically examines McCormack’s challenge to the prevailing paradigm that has traditionally characterized Barth as a neo-orthodox theologian. This paradigm was established and propelled by Hans Urs von Balthasar, who argued that Barth made a methodological shift from dialectic to analogy in the 1930s. McCormack rejects von Balthasar’s influential the- sis, based on his intensive and extensive study of Barth’s unpublished work, arguing that Barth remained consistently a dialectical theologian. This tantalizing and refreshing approach to Barth’s early theology is soon followed by McCormack’s ontological reading of Barth’s mature doctrine of election, which posits that God’s eternal decision to be the electing God in Jesus Christ constitutes the very essence of God’s triune being. McCormack further traces how Barth’s radical view on God’s election significantly informs other key dogmatic themes, in- cluding the doctrine of God, Christ, Scripture, and others. By framing God’s being as inherently in becoming, McCormack invites a re-eval- uation of traditional interpretations and asserts that Barth’s theology provides a vital corrective to controversial issues in current theology. In this light, this essay not only offers a summary of McCormack’s critical perspective but also engages with ongoing debates surround- ing Barth’s legacy and relevance in contemporary theology, ensuring that Barth’s voice remains pertinent and valid in today’s theological discourse.
