Abstract
This thesis is an investigation of the medical mission works of the missionaries belong to the Canadian Presbyterian Mission to Korea-especially at Yongjeong in Manchuria(Kanto). It was since 1898 that the Canadian Presbyterian Missionaries started their ministry publicly. They took over the Wonsan Station of the Korea Mission of the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. A. in 1898. They founded Sungjin Station in 1901, and Hamheung Station in 1904, and extended their territory to Manchuria(Kanto) and to the Maritime Provinces in East Russia. Most Canadian missionaries in Korea took anti-Japanese attitude but were sympathized with Koreans. They opened Yongjeong Station in 1913, Mr. Barker and his wife were the first resident missionary there. In 1916 Dr. Martin started medical works there and his dispensary had grown into a hospital(St. Andrew's Hospital) in 1918. He was sympathized with the Korean Independence Movement and protected the leaders in his hospital in 1919. When the Japanese military undertook a punitive expedition against Koreans in Kando in October, 1920, he made a number of trips into the country among the ruins of many villages and reported to the Foreign Mission Board against the Japanese military atrocities. In 1927 Dr. Martin moved to the Severance Union Medical College and Hospital in Seoul as a professor, Dr. Black took charge of St. Andrew's Hospital at Yongjeong. Because of cvacuation of missionaries the hospital was transferred to Koreans in April 1941 and was continuing as late as March, 1942, though there was a good deal of supervision by the Japanese.
