Abstract

In this paper, the writer explored the origin and development of medical work of the Australian Presbyterian Mission(APM) in South Kyungsang Province over forty years from the antival of Dr Hugh Cutrell in 1902 to the closing of the Paton Memorial Hospital in 1942. The Australian missionaries were pioneers in the introduction of Westem medicine, as well as modem education. This medical work is largely responsible for the present achievements in medicine in the South Kyungsang province. Of the 78 Australian missionaries, medical personnel numbered only 11 (4 doctors and 7 futses) including the Rev J. N. Macketizie who worked in the lepers asylum in Busan. Together with the Koreans they trained, they engaged in medical work and evangelism, both in the hospital and in the outlying districts. The Paton Memorial Hospital in Chinju, which was the only modern hospital in the South Kyungsang province, contributed greatly to improving public health and medical standards. There were health clinics at the other mission stations. Medical work for lepets in Busan station was a specialized form of medical service caried on for more than thirty years. The medical work of the mission broadened the mcta scientific bclicts of those who considered that illass and mental disorder wcro directly caused by cvil spirits. They helped people to understand and appreach the human anatomy and diseases from a scientific perspective.
