초록

This essay examines the ways in which trachoma, a contagious eye disease, was perceived in the early twentieth century and discusses the introduction and transmission of medical knowledge and treatment of trachoma in colonial Korea. At the turn of the twentieth century, with their increased immigration to the United States, Asians were believed to spread trachoma, and quarantines were strictly enforced against them. The perceived threat of trachoma was not unknown in East Asia; contemporary discourses about the dangers of trachoma suggested diverse ways in which Western medical knowledge was disseminated and appropriated. Trachoma was not an imminent threat, so there was time and space for different kinds of knowledge to be exchanged. This essay explores how perceptions of and responses to trachoma were shaped in East Asia, particularly in colonial Korea, which was seen by the United States as a major source of trachoma transmission. It also highlights the “insider’s view” of those accused of being “outsiders” who spread the disease to the West. Specifically, this essay traces the dissemination of knowledge about trachoma to the public and the ways in which it was understood in the medical community. Furthermore, it examines various treatments for trachoma—mainly eye drops—in newspaper advertisements and health advice columns to show how the understanding of trachoma was applied to the public in colonial Korea.
