“한국 사실주의의 희곡의 최고봉”: <산불> 분석과 주요 공연사

Abstract

This study is an analysis of <A Forest Fire> by Bumsuk Cha from the perspectives of Realism. The author’s realistic consciousness and the history of its performance are also explored to study its realistic roots and fulfillments. Indeed, <A Forest Fire> is one of the representative plays of the modern Korean theatre. It conveys the ideological conflicts and everyday lives of the humble class after the 6.25 Korean War in content, and it faithfully follows the techniques and philosophies of realism in form. The causality based on the environment and human instinctive desire is well developed, and many other realistic techniques such as detailed environmental descriptions and multiple heroes are skillfully used. Thus, <A Forest Fire> shows the peak of realistic Korean plays. The representative performances of this play are also done in realistic style. When it was adapted into Chang-guk, the traditional Korean singing theatre, and musicals, its performances were not successful. The play was well received only when it kept realistic style. <A Forest Fire> is a successful realistic play even when we compare it with the western realistic plays. Though it moved its environment to Korean an isolated mountain village after the Korea War, it is well realized the ideas and the techniques of Realism.
