본고는 1930년대 하와이 한인 이주민 2세들에 의해 각색․공연된 것으로 추정되는 『홍길동전』의 각색본 <로터스 버드>를 분석한다. 하와이 한인 이주민 2세들이 왜 『홍길동전』을 선택했으며, 어떻게 <로터스 버드>로 각색하였고, 이를 통해 어떠한 무대를 선보였는지를 추적할 것이다. 첫째, 하와이 한인 이주민들이 가졌던 한글과 전통예술에 대한 태도를 검토하여, 공연을 위해 『홍길동전』을 선택할 때 작품의 내용뿐만 아니라 당시 이 소설에 새롭게 부여된 ‘최초의 한글소설’이라는 권위 또한 고려했을 것이라는 점을 논증한다. 둘째, 희곡 <로터스 버드>를 분석하여, 이 각색본이 길동을 포함한 주요 등장인물들의 ‘자유연애’에 대한 열망을 중심으로 재구성되었음을 밝히고, 이러한 변주를 통해 하와이 한인 2세들이투영하고자 했던 자신들의 문제의식에 관해 논의한다. 마지막으로 1934년 <로터스 버드> 공연을 검토하여, 이 작품이 하와이 한인 2세들이 ‘한인’ 정체성을 유지하면서도 하와이 사회가 부여한 ‘오리엔탈’ 정체성을 포용할 수 있음을 역설한다는 것을 논증할 것이다. 본 연구는 결국 1930년대 하와이의 정치, 사회, 문화적 배경에 대한 고려 속에서 <로터스 버드>를 분석하여, 하와이 한인 2세들이 어떻게 전통과 근대, 조국 조선과 고국 하와이 사이에 놓인 자신들의 이중적 정체성을 포용하는 경계인적 정체성을 제시하고 있는지를 추적할 것이다.
Abstract
This paper examines the play Lotus Bud, an English adaption of The Story of Hong Gildong, produced by Korean immigrants in Hawai‘i in 1934. I ask why second generation Hawaiian immigrants might have chosen The Story of Hong Gildong, how it was adapted into Lotus Bud and finally, how it might have been staged. Firstly, I explore the second generation immigrants sense of their language and culture, focusing on the consideration that Hong Gildong is ‘the first Korean-written novel’, a consideration that would have been taken into account when it was chosen for adaptation. I then analyze the play, particularly focusing on how the added theme of ‘free love’ presents the Korean immigrants’ new perspectives on love, marriage, and nation. Lastly, I contend that the 1934 production manifested how the changing, yet distinctive Korean identity could meet the dual demands imposed upon them to preserve Korean-ness as well as to adopt Asian- American-ness. My examination of Lotus Bud ultimately shows that this performance of tradition was a presentation of the early Korean-Americans’ liminal identity, placed between tradition and modernity, as well as fatherland and homeland.
