푸코의 비판 개념으로 본 농당스- 제롬 벨의 작품을 사례로

농당스(non-danse)는 춤으로 식별되지 않는 움직임을 보이지만 여전히 무용으로 분류되는 무용 공연 현상으로 흔히 이해된다. 하지만 농당스는 오늘날 컨템퍼러리 댄스에서 관찰되는 춤의 패러다임 전환에 주요한 계기로서, 전통적 춤의 관념에 균열을 일으킨 현상이자 춤의 과거와 현재, 미래를 바라볼 수 있도록 해주는 일종의 렌즈로 재평가되어야 한다. 이 글은 춤의 전통적 관념과 농당스의 선구자로 알려져 있는 프랑스 안무가 제롬 벨(Jérôme Bel)의 초기 작품을 분석적으로 고찰해 무용 공연의 새로운 현상과 안무 개념의 변화를 중점적으로 살펴보고, 결정적으로 프랑스 철학자 미셸 푸코(Michel Foucault)의 비판(critique) 개념을 적용해본다. 농당스에서 푸코적 비판은 단지 이전의 춤에서 결함을 발견하고 그것을거부한 것이 아니라 춤에 대한 인식 전반의 한계를 드러낸다. 이로써 이 글은 농당스가 재귀적(self-reflexive) 비판 실천을 통해 일으킨 혁신적인 춤 패러다임의 전환이 ‘농당스’라는 이름이 직관적으로 연상시키는 것처럼 무용사의 급진적인 단절이 아니라 춤의 역사적 진화였음을 규명하고자 한다.
Abstract
Non-danse is commonly understood as a dance phenomenon that displays movements not discernible as dance, but still classified as dance. However, non-danse must be re-evaluated as a practice that created a rupture in the traditional idea of dance, and as a lens through which we can examine the past, present and future of dance. This study examines the traditional idea of dance along with several early works of French choreographer Jérôme Bel, known as a pioneer of non-danse, in order to look into the new aspects of dance performances and changes in the concept of choreography. By applying Michel Foucault’s concept of critique, this study finds that non-danse reveals the limits of overall recognition in dance. It therefore seeks to show that the innovative shift in the paradigm of dance that non-danse caused through self-reflexive critique is not a radical break, but a historical evolution of dance.
