Abstract

What is the international art scene like for artists immigrating from Korea, China, and Japan? Where have these artists immigrated to? How have their choices differed over time? Why have they decided to settle where they have? To answer these questions, this paper looks closely at international art magazines and related sources. It finds that the international art community has emphasized the importance of Western locations such as the United States (New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco), France (Paris), Britain (London), and Germany (Berlin), leading artists to migrate to these locations. It also finds that artists’ preferences are changing, with artists migrating to more countries, including Switzerland and the Netherlands, since 2000. Finally, it finds that artists migrate for diverse reasons, including family, marital, and political considerations as well as access to exhibitions, study abroad programs, and employment opportunities.
