Abstract
This paper deals with the situation of Contemporary Asian art (China, Japan, Korea) in France. It summarizes the history of the reception of Asian art in France, including chinoiseries and japonisme in the last recent centuries. In that respect, the East exists as the Other for the West, these two cultures influence each other (e.g: Japonisme and impressionism, ukiyo-e art), and Asian contemporary art is also built around this relationship with how it is seen in the French perspective and postcolonialism . This paper focuses on diasporic Chinese artists such as Chen Zen and Huang Yong Ping, using the notion of alterconceptual art derived from Bourriaud’s idea of the altermodern. Through their experience of trans-culture, they create a world merging the West and the East. For example, Murakami Takashi’s 2010 exhibition in Versailles may condense the history of the relationship between France and Japan through the blending of various cultures in the same hybrid space. Compared with Japanese and Chinese artists, Korean artists are beginning to emerge in France. I would then like to focus on their potentialities by presenting two exhibitions I organized in Paris: “Neo-Graphy” (2010, 11 Korean artists) and “Vide & Plénitude” (“Emptiness and Plenitude”) (2009, 4 Korean artists and 4 French artists). The word “graphy” refers to process, temporality and site as the place of creation, and the exhibition focuses on ‘Métissage’ (ethnic/esthetic blending) and ‘Devenir’ (becoming). “Vide & Plénitude” underscores the common points and differences in the conception of the empty space in the West and in the East.
