Abstract

This study explores the discourse of dance and choreography within Black Lives Matter activism. As a key element of the BLM protests, I analyzed the characteristics of dance protests and choreographic protests. The BLM protests are different from previous Civil Right Movements in its diversity, nonviolence, and decentralization, and its dance repertoire is new. In BLM protests, dance has been highlighted as a genuine expression of emotion or a peaceful action in the realm of protests. However, even if this perspective affirms dance, dance is often considered as ‘the Other’ to rationality, language, and knowledge. I argue that dance should be seen as a performative and political practice. The dynamic of a protest glides between structure and improvisation, facilitating a change in dance discourse in which there is a lingering hierarchical dualism between composition and improvisation.
