예술과 과학의 탈경계, 소재의 차용에서 주체의 협업으로-《사용된 미래(Used Future)》전시를 중심으로

현대미술은 작품의 소재로 기술적 요소를 적극적으로 차용하고 있다. 본고는 그러한 양상을 넘어, 예술가와 과학자가 창작의 주체로 함께 참여한 작품들을 다룬다. 이를 위하여 서론에서는 예술과 과학이 화합 혹은 충돌해 온 역사적 상황을 간략히 기술하고, 양자가 융합한 주요 예술작품을 제시한다. 이후 예술과 과학의 탈경계성을 논의하기 위하여, 예술가와 과학자가 공동 작업한《사용된 미래(Used Future)》전시작품의 특성을 도출하였다. 요약하면 일상과 전시의 공간을 넘나드는 기술의 확장, 신체기관과 기계라는 이질적 요소들의 연결, 그리고 비가시적 차원을 향한 인간 의지의 승화에 관한 것이다. 전술한 예술가와 과학자의 상호주체적 협업에 나타난 탈경계적 재현은 인간 삶의 질적인 향상과 공공의 이익을 위한 노력의 일환이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 기술적 진보에서 나아간 공공선(common good)을 향해 가는 문화적 실천행위들의 탈경계성에 관한 탐색에 다름 아니다.
Abstract
Contemporary art actively uses technological elements as subject matter. This article pushes further to deal with the trans-boundary of works in which artists and scientists participate together as subjects of creation. I begin with historical context describing moments in which art and science have been in harmony or in conflict and then present examples of art and science in the modern society. I next discuss the trans-boundary characteristics of the two and the exhibition works of Used Future, a collaboration between artists and scientists. The works are analyzed in the following aspects. The first is the affinity of works of art that infiltrate into everyday spaces using technology. The second is the extension of technology for overcoming the limit of human body used in the singularity movement. The third is the human desire and will for the other dimension to reproduce the aforementioned indeterminate space-time. This goal of this article is the exploration of cultural practices for the common good.
