이 논문은 <사도>에 나타난 부자갈등의 양상을 살펴봄으로써 영화 속 부자갈등의 현재적 의미를 고찰해 보고자 하였다. <사도>는 임오화변을 다룬 여타의 사극과 달리 정치적, 역사적 배경을 과감히 배제한 채 오로지 부자갈등에만 집중한다. 영화는 이 과정에서 모두가 아는 결말과 스토리를 극적으로 연출하기 위해 과거와 현재가 교차되는 플래시백 기법을 적극적으로 사용한다. 이를 통해 <사도>는 우리가 익히 아는 뻔한 이야기를 우리시대의 새로운 이야기로 만들어 내는데 성공한다. <사도>에는 영조와 사도세자, 그리고 사도세자와 세손인 정조 간에 이루어지는 각기 다른 부자갈등의 두 양상이 등장한다. 영조와 사도세자가 만들어 내고 있는 외재적 부자갈등은 부계사회 전통 속에서 서로가 서로에게 기대했던 욕망이 충족되지 못한 좌절감에서 기인한다. 이들의 갈등은 부계사회 전통과 그들이 처한 환경이 만들어낸 어쩔 수 없는 필연적인 결과였던 셈이다. 사도세자와 세손인 정조 사이에 이루어지고 있는 내재적 부자갈등은 영조와 사도세자의 갈등처럼 눈에 띄게 드러나지는 않는다. 하지만 이들의 부자갈등은 그들이 소유하고자 하는 동일한 욕망의 대상, 다시 말해 절대 권력을 상징하는 영조라는 대상을 두고 시종일관 치열하게 전개된다. 영화에 등장하는 이러한 부자갈등의 두 가지 양상은 대한민국이 현재 직면한 세대갈등의 양상과 유난히 닮아 있다. 결론적으로 <사도>는 영조와 사도세자, 세손 정조의 3대에 걸친 부자갈등의 양상을 통해 현 시대의 부모와 자식 간의 갈등을 유비적으로 보여줌으로써 관객들의 공감을 얻는데 성공한다.
Abstract
his study purposed to examine the patterns of the father-son conflicts in movie The Throne and to discuss the contemporary meaning of the conflicts in the movie. Different from other historical dramas covering the Crown Prince Sado’s tragic death in 1762, The Throne focuses fully on the father‐son conflict, excluding all the political and historical backgrounds. In the process, the movie uses the flashback technique that crosses the past and the present with each other for more dramatic presentation of the well‐known conclusion and story. Through this, The Throne succeeds in creating a new story of our age out of the well-known ancient story. The Throne shows two different patterns of father-son conflict, respectively, between King Yeongjo and Crown Prince Sado and between Crown Prince Sado and his eldest son King Jeongjo. The extrinsic father-son conflict between Yeongjo and Crown Prince Sado arises from frustration out of their failure to satisfy each other’s expectation in the tradition of the patriarchal society. That is, the conflict was an unavoidable consequence of the patriarchal tradition and the environment in which they were situated. The intrinsic father-son conflict between Crown Prince Sado and his eldest son Jeongjo is not as noticeable as that between Yeongjo and Crown Prince Sado. However, their conflict develops consistently and fiercely over the same object of desire that they want to possess, namely, King Yeongjo as the symbol of absolute power. The two patterns of father-son conflict observed in the movie are remarkably similar to the intergenerational conflict that the Korean society is faced with today. In conclusion, The Throne succeeds in winning the audience’s sympathy by suggesting the conflict between today’s parents and children analogically through the father-son conflicts among the three generations Yeongjo, Crown Prince Sado, and Jeongjo.
