현대의 도시는 자본주의의 활력에 힘입어 형태를 취하고 바꾸며 자신의 모습을 전시한다. 그런데 예기치 않은 역사적 사건이 그 흐름에 개입하여 도시의 풍광을 다르게 결정짓기도 한다. 1980년 광주시에서 일어난 일이다. 이후 광주시는 과거로부터 이어져 오던 괘도에서 이탈하여 현재의 풍광에 이른다. 이글은 전남 도청 건물의 ‘장소성’을 탐색하고 그것이 어떻게 광주아시아문화전당이나 연극적 재현물들과 같은 실체적이고 비실체적인 공간들을 생산했는지를 탐색한다. 아시아문화전당과 옛 전남도청 건물은 과거 역사와 미래 아시아 주요 문화도시로의 욕망의 증거로 이웃하여 위치하고 있다. 전자가 이야기를 만들어내도록 타자의 응시를 부추긴다면, 후자는 그들의 무대가 되고 있다. 이 과정을 통해 광주시는 역사와 문화가 있는 도시 정체성을 강화하게 된다.
Abstract
The city is a place of transformation, driven by the dynamic energy of capitalism. To take one example, the overnight industrialization of Korea resulted in the equally swift transformation of urban landscapes. However, unexpected historical events can intervene in this process and result in entirely different directions. The Gwangju Uprising on May 18, 1980 is such an event, resulting in the deviation of Gwangju from its set course and with consequent echoes in the present landscape. This paper aims to examine the ‘placeness’ of the former Jeonnam provincial government building and observe how it produced substantial and insubstantial spaces like the Asia Culture Center and theatrical representations. The Asia Culture Center and the former Jeonnam provincial government are of particular interest as examples of how placeness can excite the imagination and theatrical representations as symbolic performative actions. The one invites the gaze of the other to inspire stories, while the other provides the stage on which to perform them.
