Abstract
This study examines the relationship between trauma and image as the language of reproduction of fragmentary memory and nonlinear time in postmodern society. In the postmodern society where it is no longer possible to recognize history in a continuous form, the crisis of memory and history is particularly relevant to traumatic events. Images of trauma can be a way to approach unrepresentable history. When expressing traumas that are difficult to imagine at the level of consciousness as a series of narratives, images, unlike language, accept the damaged self-concept itself as the subject of memory. Based on these concepts, this study examines the video work of Victor Burgin, a British artist and a theorist, as an example to present a new direction for historical descriptions in the postmodern society which is based on image-oriented reasons. Burgin suggests the concept of ‘Cinematic Heterotopia’ by distinguishing his video work from other single-track narratives. While a film with linear narratives connects images in a single way based on a certain story, Burgin’s image is a fragmentary and discontinuous compilation of meanings of the inner world. This mixed image provides an opportunity for rewriting stories and beings that have been overlooked or omitted as historical existence.
