Abstract
This article explores the mirror neurons responses when observing abstract paintings. Mirror neurons activate in action or to action executed by others. Thus, the activation of mirror neurons is unlikely in abstract paintings that display pure visual elements. The study of Sbriscia-Fioretti et al. presents intriguing findings regarding the significance of mirror neurons responses to brushstrokes when observing abstract paintings. However, the study of Eom and Lee demonstrated that there are abstract paintings that do not accompany mirror neuron responses in viewing. A review of these studies concludes that the mirror neuron responses are related to the perception of illusion. Mirror neurons are activated for abstract paintings when the artist emphasizes brushstrokes, allowing the perception of the stroke itself rather than an illusion. Moreover, the viewer not only appreciates the visual elements such as composition, arrangement and color, but also the artist’s act of drawing, and further experiences the creative process.
