2016년 하반기 정국, 다큐멘터리 영화와 민주주의 -<자백>, <무현, 두 도시 이야기>를 중심으로-

예술은 언제나 우리 사회의 공통감각을 기록해왔다. 그렇다면 동시대 한국 다큐멘터리 영화는 사회에 어떻게 반응하고 있을까? 민주주의가 훼손되고, 2016년 4월 총선 이후 더욱더 민주주의에 목말라 하던 시민들은 불통으로 일관해온 박근혜 정부에 피로감을 느끼고 있었다. 방송장악은 더 노골화되어 공중파, 종편, 케이블까지 방송에 대한 기대감을 접은 시민들은 팟캐스트 등의 SNS와 인터넷을 기반으로 하는 대안 언론에 관심을 돌렸고, 또한 공정 방송의 빈 자리를 다큐멘터리 영화가 채워 주리라고 기대하고 있었다. 이에 따라 2016년 영화계의 화두는 ‘시대성’이 중심이 되었다. <동주>, <밀정>, <덕혜옹주>, <귀향>처럼 일제강점기에 일본제국주의에 항거한 독립군과 일본군 ‘위안부’를 다루는 영화가 성공하였다. 또한 2015년부터 이어진 사회비판적 영화 경향을 계승한 <부산행>, <터널>, <마스터>, <판도라>, <아수라>, <내부자들>과 같은 주류영화들이 주목을 받았다. 그리고 두 가지 다른 성격의 다큐멘터리가 크게 성공했다. 방송국 PD 출신에서 다큐멘터리 영화에 도전한 최승호 감독의 <자백>과, 극영화 경력에서 다큐멘터리로 선회한 전인환 감독의 <무현, 두 도시 이야기>이다. <자백>은 정치 추리 다큐멘터리이고, <무현, 두 도시 이야기>는 현장 기록성이 강한 인물 다큐멘터리이다. 제작 유형은 다르지만 이 두 작품을 관통하는 키워드가 있다. 그것은 ‘시대성’과 ‘비판성’이다. 이는 2016년 하반기 탄핵 정국을 예고하는 징후적인 작품인 동시에, 촛불 정국에 더욱 주목받은, 시대를 대표하는 작품들이다. 본고는 두 작품이 2016년 탄핵 정국에서 가지는 의미를 ‘민주주의와 다큐멘터리 영화’의 관계에 주목하여 분석한다.
Abstract
Art has always recorded the common sense of our society. So how does contemporary Korean documentary film react to the society? The democracy was damaged and the citizen who was thirsty for democracy after the general election in April felt tiredness by Park Geunhye. Broadcast control became more and more explicit. Citizens collapsed the expectation of broadcasting from public channels to comprehensive programming channels and cables channels. They were interested in SNS such as podcasts and other media based on the internet, and were expecting to fill in the space of the fair broadcasts with documentary films. As a result, the theme of the film industry in 2016 was ‘contemporaneity’. Like Dongju, The Age of Shadows, The Last Princess and Spirit’s Homecoming, the movies dealt with the independence army against Japanese imperialism and wartime sexual slavery by Japan have shown great success in mainstream film market. In addition, blockbuster films such as Train to Busan, Tunnel, Master, Pandora, Asura: The City of Madness, and Insiders, which inherited the social criticism tendencies that followed since 2015, attracted attention. Also, two documentaries of different characteristic have been successful in 2016. They are Confession of director Choi Seung-ho who challenged documentary film from broadcasting station PD, and Moohyun, a Story of Two Cities of director Jeong, In-hwan. Confession is an political chasing documentary, and Moohyun, a Story of Two Cities is a human documentary on the field. There are different types of production, but there are keywords that go through these two documentaries. They are ‘contemporaneity’ and ‘political criticism.’ These docs are symptomatic works that predict the presidential impeachment in the second half of 2016. Also, they are works that attracted more attention to the candlelight vigil and the representative works of the era. I analyze the meaning of the two docs in the presidential impeachment in 2016 by paying attention to the relationship between ‘democracy and documentary film’.
