한국전쟁영화 <인천>에 투영된 반공주의와 통일교의 이념

한국전쟁영화 <인천>(1982)은 할리우드 제작 시스템과 한국의 자본이 결합되어 만들어진 독특한 작품이다. 이 영화는 종종 할리우드가 만든 최악의 영화 중 하나로 선정되어 왔으며, 전문가들과 일반 대중들의 반응 역시 이 같은 평가에서 크게 벗어나지 않았다. 하지만 일반 대중들이 이 영화가 문선명을 비롯한 통일교와 관련되었다는 사실에 거부감을 드러냈다면, 영화 전문가들은 이 영화의 미적 완성도를 문제 삼으면서도 그것이 통일교의 교리와는 무관하다고 말해 왔다. 하지만 본 논문은 이 영화의 서사와 통일교의 교리는 밀접한 관련을 갖고 있다고 주장한다. 단적으로 그것은 반공주의였으며, 이러한 반공주의가 영화 전문가들이 언급했던 미적 완성도와 역사적 사실의 왜곡에 영향을 주었다. 하지만 이때의 반공주의는 미국을 중심으로 아시아 국가들이 종속되는 기왕의 이념과는 다르며 통일교의 교리에 의해서 변형된 이념이었다. 1970년대 문선명은 한국과 일본과 미국을 각각 아담과 이브와 천사장으로 해석했고, 이들 세 국가가 성서에 나온 것과 같이 신 앞에 평등한 존재로서 힘을 합쳐야만 하나의 평화세계가 만들어진다고 주장했다. 영화 <인천>에는 이 같은 그의 생각이 그대로 반영됐다. 팔미도 등대작전이 재현됨으로써 한국인과 일본인 그리고 미국인이 동등한 입장에서 임무를 수행하는 모습이 그려질 수 있었다. 이 외에도 영화 전체에 걸쳐 아시아인들은 영어를 유창하게 구사하며 미국인들과 자연스럽게 소통하며, 그들로부터 도움을 받는 존재가 아니라 오히려 도움을 주는 주체적인 인물들로 재현되었다. 반면 더글라스 맥아더를 비롯한 미국인들은 강력한 남성적 주체성을 드러내는 인물이 아니라 신에게 의지하는 겸손한 인물들로 그려지며, 그렇지 못한 미국인들은 영화에서 비판적으로 재현됐다. 이처럼 영화 <인천>에 등장한 아시아인들과 미국인들은 이전에 발표되었던 할리우드 한국전쟁영화와 상당히 다르게 재현되었다. 이러한 재현은 통일교라는 종교적인 속성이 반공주의와 결합됨으로써 이루어질 수 있었다.
Abstract
The Korean War film <Inchon>(1982) is a very unique product that was made in collaboration between Hollywood in USA and the Unification Church in South Korea. Many Hollywood technicians and famous actors including Sir Laurence Kerr Olivier came to Korea to make this film. The Unification Church invested an enormous amount of money. However movie critics and the general public have chosen <Inchon> as one of the worst movies ever made in Hollywood. The general public felt a repulsion on the fact that the Unification Church made it. On the other hand, Movie reviewers criticised it only from the aesthetic point and they asserted that there was no connection between the narrative of it and the Unification Church. However this paper argues that they had a close connection with each other and the anticommunism was the final result from it. Of course, here, the anticommunism differs from the conventional notion which have been woven around USA. This specific anticommunism was vitalized and modified by the religious value : the Unification Church doctrine. The reverend Moon Sun Myung considered the situation in USA in the 1970s as a crisis. He strongly blamed many Americans having antiwar sentiment, liberalism and individualism. He also strongly advocated the unusual interpretation of the Bible. He said that South Korea, Japan, and USA were corresponded with Adam, Eve, and Archangel respectively according to the Bible. This paper argues that his opinions were reflected in <Inchon>. Asians and Americans including General Douglas MacArthur represented in <Inchon> are very different from them in many Korean War films made by Hollywood. Palmido(팔미도) lighthouse operation was represented in this film and Douglas MacArthur was depicted as a human being or a messenger of God. This style of representation could treat Asians and Americans in <Inchon> equally under the protection of God. This kind of protection had a close connection with the anticommunism propagated by reverend Moon in the 1970s.
