Abstract

This paper examines Hugo and Wonderstruck as case studies of the recent nostalgia films that evoke the industrial and aesthetic traditions of the twentieth-century film history. These films, on the one hand, retrospectively celebrate the aesthetics and production processes of the cinema in the celluloid age as lost objects, projecting anxieties over its growing disappearance. Nevertheless, this does not necessarily mean that these films must be read as the total denial of digital technologies that have primarily lead to the post-cinema age. Digital visual effects, such as digital compositing and color correction, enable these films to recreate or amplify the visual atmospheres of the silent or technicolor cinema, which pertain to the filmic aura of the celluloid age. By investigating the technical and aesthetic dimensions of these effects, this paper argues that digital technologies do not totally break with the celluloid-based cinema but can productively interact with it to produce self-reflexive retrospections of film history.
