사회적 재난과 위기가 일상화된 동시대 현실에서 고통은 어떻게 인식되고 표현되는가? 본 논문은 한병철이 현대사회를 신자유주의에 의한 고통 완화 사회로 진단하고 팬데믹에 대해서는 공동체의 실제 고통보다 디지털 감시체제를 비판한 저작의 문제, 특히 그가 에른스트 윙거의 파시즘 이론을 맥락 없이 격언처럼 인용한 인식적 한계와 위험성을 짚는다. 이를 통해 독일 민족주의 우파 담론으로서 윙거의 고통론에 담긴 파시즘의 폭력정치 옹호, 인간을 대상화한 기술 이념, 인간의 고통을 대가로 한 정치권력 지향의 문제를 현재적으로 고찰하는 것이 본고의 주요한 과제다. 특히 벤야민의 역사철학과 유물론적 예술이론을 근거로 윙거의 이론이 제국주의 전쟁을 숭배하고 인간 육체의 기술적 변형과 사진을 이용한 전쟁의 심미화에 정당성을 부여한 도착적 인식임을 해명한다. 이어서 두 사람이 인간의 고통과 집단의 위기를 표현하는 사진을 두고 서로 대척되는 목적에서 전개했지만 그 내용에서는 유사했던 논점을 비판적으로 조명한다. 이로써 본고는 동시대의 위기적 현실과 사람들의 실제 고통에 근거하고 인간, 기술, 예술, 매체를 보다 타당하고 통합적인 관계로 이해하는 관점과 숙고를 탐색한 것이다.
Abstract
How is pain recognized and represented in contemporary where social disasters and crises are common? I analyze the limitations of Byung-Cheol Han’s book in which he criticizes the modern society as a palliative society and the digital surveillance for the pandemic rather than the pain of reality. In particular, I highlight the danger of Han’s aphoristic quotations of Ernst Jünger’s fascist writings, which are provided without context. I then point out the problems in Jünger’s theory of pain through Walter Benjamin’s criticism of the fascist theory. My observation focuses on Jünger’s propaganda discourse and use of photographs, through Benjamin’s philosophy of history and materialistic art theory. Their texts reveal similar insights but with opposing directions, regarding the capabilities of the technical medium and its ability to represent human pain and collective crisis. As a result, this research explores the valid perspectives and contemplations about the constellation of humans, art, technology, and media on contemporary crises and people’s pain.
