아상블라주 개념을 활용한 미술관의 글로벌 내러티브 연구 미국 미술관의 한국 미술 전시를 중심으로

한국에서 제작되거나 한국 기반 작가들이 제작한 미술품들은 여러 경로를 통해 해외 미술관에서 전시되고 있다. 본 연구는그 오브제들이 미국 미술관에서 전시될 때 어떤 내러티브를 형성하는지 살펴보고자 한다. 총 13곳의 미술관이 선정되었으며, 한국 관련 미술품을 전시하는 상설전과 특별전을 연구 대상으로 삼았다. 전시된 오브제, 미술관 패널, 라벨, 전시에 포함된이미지와 지도, 소책자, 도록, 각 미술관 홈페이지 및 유튜브 채널을 데이터 수집 방법으로 활용하였으며, 들뢰즈와 가타리의아상블라주 개념을 바탕으로 미술관 내러티브를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 상설전의 경우, 지리적 위치, 시대적 특징, 내러티브의 사각지대라는 주제가 드러났다. 특별전의 경우, 세부 장르에 집중하기, 현재를 반영하기, 새로운 혼성 형성하기의 큐레토리얼적 전략을 확인할 수 있었다. 세계화는 각기 다른 형태로 여러 시대를 걸쳐 존재해왔으며, 미국 미술관에서 한국 미술품으로 여겨지는 오브제들은 여러 사람들 및 여러 오브제들과 다양한 네트워크를 구성해왔고, 여러 가지 내러티브를 생성하고있었으며, 탈영토화와 재영토화를 거쳐 끊임없이 변화하고 있다.
Abstract
Korean artworks are exhibited in art museums outside of Korea via many different routes. This study navi- gates multiple narratives emerged from these objects exhibited in art museums in the U.S. Thirteen art mu- seums in the U.S. were selected for this study. Their permanent galleries as well as special exhibitions pre- senting Korea-related artworks were examined. Exhibited objects, panels, labels, images, maps, leaflets, catalogs, webpage, YouTube clips were utilized for data collection. Deleuze and Guattari’s “assemblage” was used as a major concept to analyze art museums’ narratives. As a result, permanent galleries’ narra- tives were analyzed within three themes: 1) geographical location, 2) time period, and 3) narratives’ blind spots. Special exhibitions revealed three curatorial strategies that were employed: 1) focusing on a partic- ular genre, 2) reflecting the present, and 3) creating new hybrids. Globalization has existed in multiple forms across time and space. Likewise, Korean art objects have formed diverse networks and various narratives. They are constantly transforming through deterritorialization and reterritorialization.
