근대적 영화관람문화의 등장과 공론장으로서의 영화관: 제도화 시기 독일 영화관을 중심으로

본고는 독일에서 영화가 제도화되던 시기 영화상영관의 관람문화 및 관객성을 예시로 테크놀로지 미디어로서 영화의 근대적 면모에 대한 이해를 시도한다. 독일에서 영화는 그 탄생 시기의 시각문화 흥행업의 모습뿐만 아니라, 산업화되고 제도화되면서 보여준 예술미학적 면모에 이르기까지 세계영화사를 각인한 중요한 연구대상이었으며, 근대 매체로 제도화된 영화(관) 의 모습을 전형적으로 보여주고 있기도 하다. 특히, 쾌적한 본격 영화관 키노테아터가 등장하기 시작한 1907년 이래, 급격하게 변화한 독일의 영화 생태계는 내러티브 미디어로서, 그리고근대 대중사회의 주요 여가문화이자 커뮤니케이션 통로로서 영화의 표상을 확고히 한 바 있다. 본고는 독일에서 키노테아터 형식의 영화관이 본격화한 1910년 전후의 관람문화, 즉 정시입장에 이은 관내(館內) 정숙성이라는 관람 환경 변화에 특히 주목하고 있다. 이 새로운 관람문화는, 영화가 가진 초창기의 전근대적 성격과는 질적으로 다른 매체적 성격을 전면화하도록해주었으며, 동시에 영화관을 근대적 공공공간으로 자리매김하도록 하였기 때문이다. 초창기동네의 로컬 공동체 구현의 공간이었던 영화상영관과는 다르게, 키노테아터와 궁전극장 등 근대 영화관은 대도시 문화를 각인하는 근대적 공공공간으로 받아들여졌으며, 대중을 시민문화와 만나게 하는 문화예술 공간으로서 자리매김한다. 바로 이러한 영화관의 면모가 영화를 근대 대중사회 속 주요 미디어이자 문화예술로 각인했다 할 것이다.
Abstract
I would like to understand characters of the film as a modern medium with focusing on the cinematic experience of the spectator in the movie theater in institutionalization process of the Film in Germany. Around 1907, a new form of the movie theater, i.e. Kino-Theater which was much bigger and more comfortable than before, appeared and changed characters of the film. Especially feature-length narrative genre-films starring famous actors were played in the new comfortable movie theater and the film programs performing as the attraction and exhibition that had dominated the early cinema era gradually disapeared. In this time, the film in Germany was been not also narrative media, but a primary leisure culture and a communication channel in the modern mass society, so the film was permeated into the bourgeoisie class and naturally institutionalized. In these changes of the film business environment showed up a new viewing culture of the spectator in movie theater, i.e. the audience had to watch the film in silence and immobility in just one seat, unlikely in the Ladenkino period. This new viewing culture and spectatorship changed the movie theater into a public space which the mass in the early 20th century communicated gathering around together in and it was occurred to the place of social and cultural discours. With these characters of the movie theater, the medium of film has appeared as a modern medium.
