Abstract
This study undertakes a critical exploration of the recurring motif of the mirror-image in cinematic portrayals of transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) individuals. Traditionally construed as emblematic of self-fragmentation, the depiction of TGNC bodies in mirror-images within films reinforces a superficial narrative of a fractured and divided psyche and body. However, mirror images manifest intricate perceptual structures, encapsulating dynamics such as the interplay between characters and their reflected selves, as well as the interaction between the audience and the cinematic screen. This paper concentrates on unraveling the nuanced layers inherent in mirrorimages and proposes a redefinition of cinema as a ‘cinema-mirror.’ Drawing upon V. Sobchack’s phenomenological film theory, this conceptualization positions cinema as a medium that deconstructs the conventional dichotomy between the gazing subject and the gazed object. The cinema-mirror signifies a realm of coexistence where cinema actively engages with the tangible world, shaping and ascribing meaning to the shared experiences of the audience. This paradigm implies that the cinematic world, as a cinema-mirror, engages with the audience’s world in a reciprocal ‘seeing and seen’ dynamic, constituting each other’s reality. Consequently, the portrayal of the TGNC body image in mirror-images within the cinematic realm as a cinema-mirror is reconceptualized not as a manifestation of self-fragmentation but as a specific symbol of otherization onto which societal scrutiny converges. Therefore, as the subject of perception that constitutes the world of cinema, the audience is exposed as a subject of fragmentation, imposing its fragmented ‘gaze.’
