Abstract
This paper aims to analyze the appearance of unclear images in films and their effects. The unclear image enables various analyzes of the artworks by moving away from objective and accurate representation and placing the image in an ambiguous and amorphous area. Cinema is an art with movement, and the unclear images in films are closely related to the technical elements of cinema, such as distortion and overlap, defocusing due to shallow depth of field, and low resolution. The defocused images in Son of Saul(2015, László Nemes) and low resolution images in Let the Summer Never Come Again(2017, Alexandre Koberidze), which are the focus of this paper, appear vague and blurry, making clear identification difficult. The defocused images in Son of Saul reveal subjects in a way that conseals them and respond to the question of Holocaust representation by recreating the limited view from inside Auschwitz concentration camp. The low resolution images in Let the Summer Never Come Again point to the memories of war that lie beneath the surface narrative of the character’s love story. The low resolution images, in which the subjects are indistinct to the point of obscurity, contrast with the high definition images that recall the memories of the war, creating a sense of transcendence and fantasy. In this way, the indistinctness of the images which includes defocused and low resolution, functions as a methodology of representation that examines the relationship between physical reality and image, and establishes an interaction between the films and the audience.
