Abstract

One of the most important goals in teaching English pronunciation in an EFL setting is to improve learners’ intelligibility, which depends on many factors such as learners’ age, native language, and aptitude. Unfortunately, however, these cannot be changed or improved. For this reason, much attention has been paid for a factor that can be changed and improved. That factor is the pronunciation learning strategy, which has been studied comprehensively by Peterson (2000), who applied general learning strategies developed by Oxford (1990). The goal of this paper was to find English pronunciation learning strategies used by sixth graders. The students’ responses were elicited, recorded, and transcribed. The results of the transcription were analyzed in terms of the 12 strategies developed by Peterson (2000). It was found that the participants did not use all the 12 strategies and that some of the strategies were used much more often than the others. It was also found that the higher-level students used more kinds of strategies and more frequently than the lower-level students, which confirmed the results of the previous research. In addition, some pronunciation learning strategies were found that did not belong to any of the strategies suggested by Peterson (2000). It is concluded that teachers should be aware of the importance of strategies in teaching English pronunciation, and that the future research should be carried out using other methods such as a diary method to see if the results of the current study can be replicated.
