온라인 초등영어 수업의 방향: 온라인 영어 수업에 관한 초등학습자들의 인식도 조사

Abstract

As COVID-19 made remote learning a new norm, every party involved has been going through trialand error in its implementation. To improve the situation calls for more scholarly research. Thepurpose of this study is to investigate primary students’ perceptions on online English education andthereby to identify better approaches to this new mode of English learning. As for the methodology,researchers surveyed 266 students between grades four and six in N elementary school located inGangwon Province. The survey was conducted online and consisted of questions concerningsatisfaction levels and difficulty levels in online English education, and preference between onlineand face-to-face learning. For the data analysis, the Jamovi statistical program was used toadminister the frequency and descriptive analysis, Independent Samples t-test as well as One-WayANOVA. The finding are as follows: First, the survey takers far preferred face-to-face English learningto the online counterpart. Second, between the video instructions given by their own English teachersand those from outside sources, primary students preferred the former; and their favorite classactivity was playing games. Third, they were generally satisfied with online English learning as suchbut found it not difficult enough, not with difficulty levels. Forth, the personal variables of genderand grade did not make a significant difference in satisfaction and difficulty levels in online Englisheducation. It is expected that these findings, as representing the views of learners themselves, willserve as an important resource for coping with the infectious disease-caused challenges of thepresent and the future. The study could also clearly remind English teachers that they need to makeevery effort to give high-quality instructions even in the difficult reality of remote learning.
