Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand causes of early sport drop out of youth, consequences of early drop out, and provide strategies to prevent drop out. Physical activity is an important behavior that can be builds in youth period for current and future health. However, participation rate of physical activity for youth is in very low. the consequences of insufficient physical activity have negative effect to health throughout the lifespan. Thus, understanding the causes of ending participation of sport is an important approach to promote youth physical activity. Early sport drop out is the ending one’s participation of sport in the beginning stage. Fun is the most commonly reported factor for youth sport participation. However, early sport specialization that emphasize the competition leads to loss of fun, increased psychological stress, and eventually early drop out. Early dropout of sport causes many negative consequences such as negative attitude toward physical activity, limitation to develop potentiality, making a barrier to reentry to sport, and negative effect to health. To promote youth participation and prevent early dropout, it is necessary to de-emphasize competition and encourage fun in organized youth sport. Refocusing the value of youth sports, use of modified sport, and development of guideline to control the quality of youth sport program are recommended to prevent from early dropout of youth sport.
