언어 교육에 있어 음악은 매우 중요한 활용요소이다. 특히 초등영어교육에 있어 노래와 챈트는 매우 효과적인 교수 방법 중의 하나로 활용되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 노래와 챈트가 초등학교학생들에게 효과적으로 사용되기 위해서는 학생들의 학년과 성별에 따른 선호도의 차이를 살펴보고자 설문조사를 하였다. 설문 결과는 저학년과 고학년 그리고 남, 여 학생들 사이에 차이가 있음을 보여주고 있다. 학년별에 있어서는 저학년이 그리고 성별에 있어서는 여학생이 영어 노래와 챈트에 관한 선호도가 높게 나타났다. 본 논문은 또한 이러한 선호도의 차이에 반영된 여러 가지 관련 요인들을 살펴보고 이들 요인 중에 노래와 챈트의 내용 즉 제재(material)의 흥미가 상관관계를 가지고 있는 다른 요인들에 비해 매우 중요하다는 것을 보여 주고 있다. 따라서 본 논문의 연구 결과는 초등학교에서 영어 지도 시 교사가 영어 노래와 챈트를 활용 시 나타나는 학년과 성별의 차이에 따른 반응의 차이를 이해하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있다. 더불어 새로운 교육과정 하에 집필되고 있는 초등영어교과서에 이런 부분이 반영 된다면 더욱 노래와 챈트 활용이 영어 학습에 주는 효과를 높일 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
Music is one of very practical uses in the language teaching. Especially, songs and chants are extensively used as the most effective teaching method in the elementary English education. In this paper, a survey about the difference on the preference about English songs and chants with regard to grade and sex was carried out targeting elementary school students. This survey could be used to apply the songs and chants more effectively to the students. In addition to the survey, the various relevant factors to the preferences are also discussed. It is found that the material, the content in the songs and chants, itself should have interest to the students compared with other factors. The result of the survey will be helpful to understand students' different reponses to chants and songs in English classes with regard to grade and sex. It would also be useful for teachers to use songs and chants more effectively to the students in accordance to the different grades and sex. Finally, if the result of the survey is reflected to the new elementary school textbooks which are being written under the new national curriculum, songs and chants will be used to the English teaching and learning for elementary school students with telling effect.
