Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find answers for the following three research questions: (1)How graded and phased writing activities can be designed for self-directed English reading and writing; (2) From the perspective of self-directed language learners, what is the reason they are in favor of a certain writing activity and select it; (3) What are the participants' perceptions of self-directed reading and writing practice? For this study, 15 fifth and sixth graders in S elementary school in Seoul participated in the 9week of the Self-Access English Reading and Writing program. With the samples of their writing artifacts, graded and phased writing activities for self-directed language learning were introduced. In addition, the analysis of their writing artifacts through descriptive statistics showed which graded and phased writing activities they preferred most; the analysis of the face-to-face interview led to find the participants' perceptions of self-directed reading and writing experience, revealing what good points were and with what aspects they felt difficulty and needed assistance. Calling for more attention to the critical role of writing in language learning, this study stresses that writing activities can serve as a catalyst for language learning, especially when self-directed reading practice is associated with graded and phased, self-directed, writing practice. Such a self-directed language learning can be one of the solutions to resolve the problems of current elementary English education such as insufficient exposure to English and students' proficiency gap within a class.
