EFL 환경의 한국 초등영어교육에서 내용 언어 통합 수업 설계및 적용 방안: PBL 기반 CLIL 수업을 중심으로

2015 교육과정의 주요 키워드인 ‘역량’을 교수하고 함양하기 위한 교수․학습 방법으로 ‘프로젝트 학습(Project-Based Learning: PBL)’이 많은 관심을 받고 있다. 한편 제2언어 및 외국어교육에서는 ‘내용 언어 통합 학습(Content Language Integrated Learning: CLIL)’이 많은 주목을 받고 있으며 국내에도 도입되어 많은 교육적 시도와 연구가 이루어졌다. 그러나 구체적인 CLIL 수업 설계 및 적용 방안에 관한 심층적인 분석은 찾아보기 어려우며, 특히 EFL 환경에서의 초등학교 영어교육의 본질적 특성을 고려한 교수․학습방법론 탐색이 필요한 상황이다. 이에 본 연구는 PBL을 기반으로 한 CLIL 수업의 설계를 위해 고려해야 할 요소를 탐색하고, 구체적인 적용 방법을 제시하였다. 이를 위해 내용 언어통합 학습에 관한 선행연구의 이론적 프레임워크를 분석하고 이를 우리나라 초등학교 영어교육 상황에적합하도록 교육적 활용 방안을 구성하여 제안하였다. 본 연구에서는 내용 언어 통합 수업 설계를 위해서 크게 교육과정 재구성을 통한 PBL 설계, 4Cs(Content, Cognition, Communication, Culture)프레임워크를 활용한 CLIL 수업 설계, 언어의 3가지 차원(Language of learning, Language forlearning, Language through learning)을 고려해야 함을 주장한다. 또한, 설계한 내용을 수업에 적용하는 방법으로는 크게 1) 영어 교과 중심 수업, 2) 타교과 연계 수업으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 이는그동안 소규모 개별 사례를 통해 소개되었거나 내용 언어 통합 수업에 대한 이론적 내용을 종합적으로고찰하는 연구에서 소개된 기본 원리에서 더 나아가 실제 초등학교 영어교육에서 내용 언어 통합 수업을 진행하는데 기초가 될 수 있는 구체적인 수업 설계와 운영 방안을 제시하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 한편 실제 수업을 운영하는 과정에서 발견되는 여러 가지 이슈(수준별 지도 방안, 효과적인 학습조직 방법, 교사의 질문 유형에 따른 학습자의 학습 효과 등)를 세부적으로 분석하는 연구가 앞으로 활발히 이루어질 필요성이 있음을 제안한다.
Abstract
2015 revised national curriculum suggest Project-Based Learning (PBL) as a way of enhancingstudent competencies, and PBL has been receiving much attention. Among second and foreignlanguage education field, a growing body of research suggest that Content Language IntegratedLearning (CLIL) facilitates language acquisition. CLIL was also introduced in Korea, and research wasconducted based on many educational initiatives and efforts. However, drawbacks such as situationallimitation of EFL and notional-functional syllabus of English curriculum in Korea make teachersteach 4 skills (i.e. Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing) in separate, even though integration of4 skills are very much required. Although many researchers have studied CLIL so far, little researchhas explored the specific method of how to design and implement lessons in EFL Korean primaryschool context. Therefore, this research investigates how to design and implement lessonincorporating PBL, and CLIL in Korean primary school English education setting. In this study, theresearcher review the theoretical frameworks of literature and suggest three ways such as, 1)designing project work based on curriculum reconstruction, 2) incorporating 4Cs (Content, Cognition,Communication, Culture) framework while planning CLIL lesson, 3) choosing appropriate languagebased on the language triptych. For implementation, this research suggest two distinctive way suchas, 1) a PBL based CLIL lesson focus on English subject only, and 2) a PBL based CLIL lessonintegrated with other subjects or topic. This research is significant in that it goes beyond thetheoretical concepts and suggest the actual way of designing and implementing PBL based CLILlesson. Meanwhile, to fully realize its pedagogical application, many issues need to be explored.
