Abstract

Czech linguists have long argued that Czech is assumed to be sensitive to Topic-Focus Articulation. According to such a traditional dichotomy of discourse, topic has been defined as the rests that do not belong to Focus. This kind of approach, however, hardly explains Czech topicalization of the left periphery of the Czech discourse structure. This paper tries to work towards a narrower definition of Czech topic, subdividing the types of topic such as proper topic, continuing topic, contrastive topic and focus. Assuming that the preposed [Spec, IP] is the structural position typical for topics, I try to analyze the close relation between individual topic and distributional constraints. In order to accomplish the goal of this paper certain diagnostics are necessary. Following Comrie(1997), I suggest that demonstrative pronouns in Czech require that their antecedents be non-topical and argue that elements which are not able to antecede a demonstrative pronoun in Czech are topical. Identifying the structural position of Czech topic, a disjunctive definition of topic can be proposed for Czech.
