Abstract
The study of the ‘Prague Spring’ in Czechoslovakia in 1968 has been analyzed in terms of power struggles within the regime, and relations with the Soviet Union. For these reasons, academics have not paid much attention to why the Prague Spring progressed so rapidly. They have also not focused on the full support it received from the Czechs and Slovaks. Actually, the Prague Spring was not the result of a mere power struggle at the top; rather, it was an event in which the voices of the oppressed rose in unison against the communist regime, and the demands for reform spread throughout society. Then, it was connected with reformers within the communist party. This paper examines the fact that the demand for reform had been widespread throughout society even before the Prague Spring and the Strahov students’ protest against the communist regime, which was the key event preceding the Prague Spring.
