Abstract
This study explores the experiences of a researcher with cerebral palsy who applied according to the disability quota for the selection of pre-service teachers in public elementary schools. The study employs autoethnography, a qualitative research method based on disability studies, to capture the first-hand perspective of the researcher. Data were collected through the researcher’s memory records, self-reflective materials, and in-depth interviews with three other applicants with disabilities who took the same exam during a similar period. The study applies ecological systems theory by Bronfenbrenner to analyze individual experiences from microsystems to macrosystems in a comprehensive manner. Generally, the results revealed social barriers and institutional inadequacies faced by pre-service teachers with disabilities. The findings pointed to three themes, namely, “dialogs with myself” (internal psychological anxiety), “people met along the way” (difficulties in relationships with others), and “close yet far, far yet close” (structural issues in the system). The researcher experienced complex challenges arising from previous negative experiences, a society centered on individuals without disabilities, and structural issues. However, the researcher adapted, grew, developed professional expertise, and sought strategies for forming relationships through active interaction with the environment. Additionally, the researcher created a communication space for a sense of belonging and underwent changes such as protesting institutional problems. The research process also facilitated a healing journey for the researcher. Her negative self-concept due to disability transformed into a positive one, and she achieved relational growth through communication with others. This study reflected the unique challenges and perspectives of a pre-service teacher with disability and aspiration to become an elementary school teacher. The findings can serve as foundational data for improving support measures for pre-service teachers with disabilities in the teacher selection and appointment process. This research provides insights into the lived experiences of teacher candidates with disabilities and contributes to the broad understanding of inclusive education and disability rights in the teaching profession.
